Stage 1: Initial Evaluation
This is the beginning of the process of designing and fabricating your new prosthesis. At this time, your prosthetist will need to know about your previous activity level including both work and recreation. This information is used to ensure that the resulting prosthesis complements your lifestyle and best meets your functionality requirements. This consultation/evaluation will help us determine the socket and suspension design, which materials to use, and the other componentry required. We should also be able to predict the fee for our services and how long the process will likely take.
Stage 2: Casting & Measurements
This stage is where the actual creation of the custom socket begins. The process starts when a model of your residual limb or stump is made either by hand using plaster bandages or scanned to a computer.
Next, the diagnostic test socket fitting is performed when a transparent diagnostic socket is created by making special modifications to the model of your stump. The diagnostic socket is fitted to your stump and further modified to ensure a comfortable and functional fit of the definitive socket. This is the most critical part of the process, and for some amputees it may require more than one test socket to ensure proper fit.
Stage 3: Dynamic Fitting & Alignment
At this stage of the process, the artificial limb or prosthesis will be tried on you and tested for comfort and function. The prosthesis is adjusted and modified in the clinic, then you will get to walk with it for a few days. This stage enables us to optimize the fit, alignment and function of your prosthesis at a stage when it is easy to make adjustments before creating your definitive prosthesis and its cosmetic covering.
Stage 4: Definitive Fitting and Cosmesis
The final stage is make the prosthesis look like a match of your other leg. Prefabricated skin coverings offer a wide variety of skin colors. The prosthetist also advises the patient on the care and maintenance of the prosthesis.
After a careful initial evaluation at your local clinic, the specialist can determine the best course of action and make recommendations, including:
Patient may be measured and fitted with the required orthotic or prosthetic at the clinic where the patient was evaluated. Measurements for the device could be done by using a computer-operated scanner or plaster bandage, depending upon the device needed. Prosthetic & Orthotic
Revive provides exceptional prosthetic care to those who require upper or lower extremity artificial limbs and orthotic care as well as to those who require orthopedic braces for their spine or extremities.
I have been in this profession for the past 22 years and for the past eight years have been working at a leading independent provider in Southern California, USA. Working in this company has enhanced my ability to monitor the provision of services at all stages to assure the best possible results for the patient.
For the past eight years I have practiced at Sunny Hills Prosthetic Services, the past six as the Director of Clinical Services, Inc. and board certified practitioner. This reputable company is accredited by the American Board of Certification in Prosthetics and Orthotics and its staff has provided care to patients in Orange County, California, since 1982.
Upon the authorization of the prescribing physician, I evaluate each patient to determine the orthopedic, neurologic and vascular factors that contribute to his or her prosthetic or orthotic requirements. Next, I formulate a plan of care, which will provide optimum comfort and function of the device. I take measurements of the patient and create a negative model of the anatomy that will interface with the device. I supervise the fabrication of the device to my specifications and perform trial fittings to enhance the results. After the item is delivered, I follow up as needed to assure that the device is meeting or exceeding the patient’s expectations.
